A garage with a lot of stuff in it which needs to be organized

The Garage Matters More Than You Think

Many homeowners overlook the garage—but buyers don’t. A crowded, overfilled garage can quickly give the impression that there isn’t enough storage space, even if that’s not actually the case. If you have a two-car garage but can only fit one car inside, you’re not alone. Like many areas of the home, the garage often becomes a catch-all and fills up faster than expected. The best place to start is by clearing out what you no longer use—old grass seed, broken tools, duplicates, and items that have simply outlived their purpose. From there, focus on organizing what you’re keeping in a way that makes the space functional and easy to maintain.

Creating order in the garage can make a big difference. Wall organizers are especially helpful because they lift items off the floor, making it easier to clean and instantly making the space feel larger. If you have the room, consider adding cabinets or shelving to keep similar items grouped together and within reach. As you go through everything, be mindful of hazardous materials like old gasoline, oil, fertilizers, weed killer, paint, and cleaning supplies. These should be taken to a local household hazardous waste facility for proper disposal—never poured into your water system, whether you’re on a private well or city service, as this can harm the environment.

You may also find that your hobbies and activities have changed over the years, leaving you with equipment you no longer use—bikes, skis, golf clubs, kayaks, tennis rackets, or even sleds from years past. Take a moment to decide what still fits your lifestyle and consider donating the rest to a growing family or a local nonprofit. It’s a simple way to give back while also creating valuable space.

Once everything is sorted and organized, take the time to give the garage a good cleaning. Sweep the floors and use a long-handled duster to reach walls and corners, especially where cobwebs tend to collect. A clean, organized garage not only feels better to you, but it also helps buyers picture how they would use the space. And that can make your home even more appealing. Sometimes, a few hours of effort on a Saturday afternoon can lead to meaningful results when it’s time to sell.
