Solo Agers: Planning Your Future When Family Isn’t Nearby

More and more adults are reaching retirement age without children, without nearby family, or without a built-in support system they can rely on as they get older. This group is sometimes referred to as “solo agers.”

While that term may be new to some people, the idea behind it is simple: planning for the future when you are primarily responsible for making your own decisions about your home, health, finances, and lifestyle. Aging independently can be a wonderful experience. Many people enjoy the freedom, flexibility, and independence that come with living life on their own terms. The key is making thoughtful plans before a situation becomes urgent.

Start Planning Before You Need To

One of the biggest challenges solo agers face is waiting too long to think about the future. A sudden health change, injury, or unexpected event can make decisions about your home much more stressful.

Planning ahead allows you to make choices when you have the most options.

Consider asking yourself:

  • Will my current home continue to meet my needs in the years ahead?

  • Is maintaining my home becoming more time-consuming or physically challenging?

  • Would I prefer a home with less maintenance and fewer responsibilities?

  • Who would help me if I needed assistance making decisions?

These questions are not about giving up independence. They are about protecting it.

Build Your Support Team

Even if family is not nearby, you do not have to navigate the future alone. A strong support network can provide guidance, resources, and peace of mind.

Your team may include:

  • Trusted friends or neighbors

  • Financial advisors

  • Estate planning attorneys

  • Healthcare professionals

  • Insurance professionals

  • Real estate professionals who understand your goals

Having these conversations early helps ensure the people you trust understand your wishes.

Take an Honest Look at Your Home

For many homeowners, the family home represents decades of memories, accomplishments, and important life moments. Deciding whether to stay or move can be emotional.

If you are considering aging in place, think about whether your home will continue to work well for you. Are there stairs that may become difficult? Is yard maintenance becoming a burden? Would repairs or updates be harder to manage in the future?

If you are considering downsizing, moving does not mean losing independence. Many homeowners find that a smaller, easier-to-maintain home gives them more time and freedom to enjoy the things they love. A villa, condo, or retirement community may provide:

  • Less home maintenance

  • More opportunities for social connections

  • Easier access to amenities

  • A lifestyle that better fits the next chapter of life

Don’t Wait for a Crisis to Make a Decision

One of the greatest advantages of planning early is that you remain in control. When people wait until a crisis occurs, they often have fewer choices and more pressure. Planning ahead gives you time to explore options, sort through belongings, prepare your home, and make decisions at your own pace. Many homeowners tell me they wish they had started sooner—not because they moved too early, but because the process felt much easier when they were prepared.

Downsizing Is About Creating the Lifestyle You Want

Downsizing is not simply about moving to a smaller home. It is about creating a home and lifestyle that support the way you want to live today and in the future. For some people, that means staying exactly where they are and making modifications. For others, it means moving closer to friends, choosing a lower-maintenance home, or finding a community with new opportunities. There is no single right answer. The best decision is the one that fits your goals, priorities, and vision for the future.

Planning Your Next Chapter

If you are a solo ager, or simply someone who wants to be prepared for the future, the best time to start planning is before you feel like you have to. Understanding your options can make the process feel less overwhelming and give you confidence in your decisions.
